Skin cancer is the abnormal growth of skin cells. Skin that is exposed to the sun is often where it’s most seen. There are three major types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.
Any mole that appears to have changed color, shape, or is painful needs to be evaluated immediately. Also, if they bleed, itch, or become scaly.
Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. There are many effective treatments, and they get better every day. Although most common in puberty, acne really doesn’t have age restrictions. It usually affects the cheeks, face, neck, and back.
Warts are generally hard, rough growths similar in color to the rest of your skin. They usually don’t result in other symptoms; they may be painful on the bottom of the feet. Most commonly they occur on the hands and feet, but they can also appear on the body in other places.
Eczema is also called atopic dermatitis. It is characterized by inflamed, itchy and red patches of skin, sometimes appearing as a rash. There are several different types that vary in severity.
Psoriasis is a skin disorder that causes an increase in skin cells, up to 10 times the normal rate. Skin will build up into bumpy, red patches covered in white scales. They can be anywhere on the body, but are most common on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back. It is thought to be an immune system disorder.
Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes visible redness and blood vessels the face and cheeks to flare beneath the surface of the skin. Sometimes, small, red pus-filled bumps are produced. Rosacea can flare and retreat for months at a time. It is most common in middle-aged women with fair skin.
